Welcome to Harmonious Home!

Good design invokes happiness and soothes the soul. It can inspire confidence, security, and energy. Color, light, and texture in living spaces can induce feelings of warmth and safety. Furniture for your belongings and a bed to sleep in improves your physical and mental well-being. Plants and flowers in the home improve and elevate mood.

We partner with local nonprofit organizations to identify individuals and families who are transitioning from a shelter, transitional living center, or who are aging out of the foster care system. Our goal is to transform their lives by transforming their living spaces with as many gently used items as possible, thereby lessening our environmental footprint.

In the Fall of 2025, Harmonious Home joined forces with the Underserved Communities Foundation (UCF) to maximize its potential and impact. Through this merger, Harmonious Home became a program of UCF, strengthening our ability to serve more families and create lasting change.

About Us

Harmonious Home helps prepare and design living spaces for clients who are moving from transitional homes or shelters to apartments or small homes.

The process of moving is hard enough, but a creative team of Harmonious Home designers, UCF staff and volunteers help facilitate a smooth transition.

The team thoughtfully:

  • assesses the clients’ needs
  • acquires furniture and home accessories
  • designs and plans each room
  • arranges furniture deliveries and placements
  • collect and review client feedback

In the end, clients are able to walk into well-designed and fully-furnished homes, giving them more time to focus on other aspects of rebuilding their lives. Harmonious Home is a program of The Underserved Communities Foundation (UCF) a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community foundation, and donations are tax-deductible to the extent of the law.

How We Make It Happen

Harmonious Home partners with local nonprofit organizations and community agencies such as The Center Against Sexual and Family Violence and The MacGuire Center to identify clients who are emerging from shelters, transitional living centers (TLC’s) and the foster care system.

After receiving counseling, resources and maybe even temporary housing from these agencies, they set out to piece their lives back together, all the while juggling responsibilities like full-time jobs, school-age children, and elderly parents. A life-changing household move is hard on all families, but particularly, on strained families like this. Harmonious Home enters the picture here.

  1. We carefully assess spaces in the new living space and learn as much as we can about the needs and wishes of this client, his or her family, etc.
  2. We engage our partnerships with locally-owned companies that value  eco-friendly and responsibly-made products and sources. Our highly experienced and creative volunteer team also scour local thrift shops for gems that could work well in the client’s new home.
  3. Our priority is creating spaces in the home so that our clients feel safe, respected and inspired.
  4. We arrange pickup and delivery of all goods and get to work.
  5. Our final and favorite step: our clients walk into a newly furnished and beautifully designed home!

Harmonious Home is a program of the Underserved Communities Foundation (UCF) a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community foundation, and donations are tax-deductible to the extent of the law.

Harmonious Home is committed to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), and does not discriminate based on the basis of race, sex (or gender) or ability in its activities or programming.

Furniture, bedding, accessories, etc. that has been cleaned and possibly used, but appears new and has no signs of wear and no flaws.

Why is this work important? How does this work impact families?

Our clients are in the middle of a courageous transition when Harmonious Home enters the picture. In most cases, they are leaving behind a life of homelessness and/or domestic violence while holding or seeking a full-time job and carrying for dependents, such as young children and/or elderly parents.

They are learning how to live independently and gaining new life skills. Incredibly, many of them undergo this transformation while navigating the judicial system and/or other resources to protect them and their families, and sometimes while speaking English as a second language, if at all.

Harmonious Home removes the burden of setting up their new home living spaces. We thoughtfully furnish and design each room so that our clients feel that they can walk into retreats of tranquility. We want our clients to feel comfortable, safe and supported and work thoughtfully and diligently to achieve this. See some of the things our clients are saying here.

How can I contribute?

We deeply appreciate our community’s generosity and like to make it easy to accept help. You can donate new or gently used furniture, donate funds or donate time volunteering. For more details, go here.

Does Harmonious Home need volunteers?

Always! If you’re interested in volunteering to help us do things like unload furniture, arrange furniture in a home or even run some errands, please get in touch with us here.

How much does it cost to furnish an apartment for a family of three to four people?

It costs about $3,500, so every donation makes a difference!

Can an apartment or room be sponsored?

Absolutely! A donation of $1,200 sponsors one bedroom. Find more info here.
